Expectations

This one is also great. In academia right now there is all this talk about the amazing things people can do in enforced isolation. Isaac Newton coming up with calculus, optics and the theory of gravity all in one year when forced by the plague to leave university and stay home. But while I love the potential and the possibility of this message, and occasionally see small bits of it coming into our lives, I also really empathize with the flip side. Just surviving each day is its own accomplishment. Managing to orchestrate a staff meeting while your kids are complaining that they are hungry and bored and the dog is barking and you can't seem to find that link to start your zoom call... :)

Two good articles on this - academia, unrealistic expectations on productivity, and ideas for sane coping strategies during the pandemic: one in Nature, one in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
