Copenhagen

I flew to Copenhagen on Thursday, to meet with colleagues for a grant we just received. From Panama to Copenhagen....! Crazy the contrast. I'm loving being in Europe again - enjoying the old city, the long sunlit days (sunset at 10pm, full darkness from 11:30pm to 2:30am). The change of pace. And also some long-awaited time on my own.

The first day I met up with my friend Rachelle Adams who is doing a postdoc at the University of Copenhagen. I got to spend the morning with the whole family, had a wonderful brunch together, followed by walking through some of the old city.

Here is sweet Lubo and Milena (now 7!).

Rachelle and me.

And Lubo's parents, en route from Bulgaria to North Dakota, where they are about to take Milena for three weeks! Rachelle and Lubo have lived in Copenhagen for four years - exactly as long as we've been in Panama. I was totally impressed with Milena's Danish - she is completely fluent, and was a great translator.

Turns out Friday was the last day of the school term, celebrated by graduating seniors throughout the city by wearing white hats, driving around the city in large open trucks, consuming large amounts of beer, and screaming at the top of their lungs! A custom I was amused to see everyone seems to smile on.

Denmark, I did not know, is the home of Lego. I entered into this understated on the outside, but very impressive on the inside, Lego store, with life-sized Lego figurines, and every Lego part imaginable.

Copenhagen is also a big biking city. I was really impressed by the great bike lanes everywhere, the small special stoplights at every intersection just for bike traffic, and how comfortably kids ride with their parents (seems so much nicer than being strapped into the back seat of a car).

Other random Copenhagen shots below - the camera on my cell phone not quite doing any of it justice. A beautiful city!

Gwendolyn - 6!

Six years ago today Gwendolyn was born....! It's amazing that we've been parents this long. Amazing the beautiful little human Gwendolyn has become!

We celebrated Gwendolyn's birthday with multiple events - cupcakes at her school a week ago Friday, a fairy extravaganza last Saturday, and cake at the Gamboa escuelita on the day of. Here are some pictures of the fairy fest - a chaotically, wonderfully rich celebration of Gwendolyn - I think she was thoroughly happy with every step of the process. The invitation:

It started with cake baking the night before. Followed by cake decorating the morning of. Efforts led by wonderful Clarice!! Who is with us for another bat-filled summer, this time living in our little guest apartment downstairs. FANTASTIC to have her back in Panama again!

Simon got in on almost all of the action - removed just long enough for Clarice to finish the ruffles on the Tinkerbell dress.

Next up was icing cupcakes, about 1000 of them. Now also assisted by Jodi Sedlock, an old friend and fellow bat researcher, visiting our lab for the week. Gwendolyn also extremely excited here.

Fast forward a bit to the party itself - here with her best friend Mila, blowing out a large number of candles.
And finally the five of us, all fairy-ed out. Happy Birthday, sweet Gwendolyn Wren! We love you!

Spring arrivals

It's been so long since our last post, I've been feeling a little daunted in trying to catch up. But we had such sweet visitors on our porch this morning, I decided to jump straight in. It's the beginning of the wet season in Panama and it seems like babies are everywhere. But I've never seen Geoffrey's tamarin babies before. It was Graciela who spotted them first, we think they are about a week old, still with eyes sealed shut.

So amazing! The mom carries them everywhere. We tried to feed her up with lots of banana, but she is now the most timid of the group.

The babies wrap themselves like tight ribbons around her body, and she jumps from tree to tree! We're crossing our fingers that these two little ones survive, we're so excited to watch them grow over time!
